There is absolutely no justification for limiting court compensations Imagine this:
a) Your  company asks you to do something illegal. You refuse and you are fired.  You go to court and show that  you were a model employee for 20+ years and there is nothing to justify your sacking. Your compensation is still at most 20 salaries. Great incentive for companies to break the law!
b)You have a contract specyfying  your pay and  contract duration. The company  wants  to breach the contract and pay you less. You refuse and are fired. If you had a  5 year contract, you  get a couple of months pay. So much for respecting contracts
c) Apartheid: Now imagine that this happens to a football player. You are a football club and you just signed a star player for say 1M/year on a 5-year deal. Because the player got injured or because  the new coach does not like the player, or just because you have the lawmakers on your side, you tell the player \"I'll pay you half of what the contract says\". The player refuses, saying \"why did you make the contract then? I would have taken other, better offers\". The law allows you to lower his pay or else fire him , for instance fabricating charges of  the player not showing up for practice, with  much less compensation than  the contract provisions. Well, UEFA would  intervene and force that club out of every competition. Ordinary people however are less equal,  thanks to Macron and co.
d)In fact a rogue business, for instance a football club could easily exploit this: Make the following offer on a closed 5 year deal to the best players: 100K for the 1st year, 1M for the 2nd, 10M for the 3rd, 100M for the 4th and 1bn for the 5th. Then, after the first year, where it may have won the Champions league, it wants to renegotiate the contracts or fire the players.
If Mr. Macron is 'centrist', then it should come as no surprise if Mrs. lepen is elected next time!

Unions are part of the equation, and that's a good thing. But during the last twenty, thirty years, a lot of unions are just trying to prevent change. Mostly because they fear their influence being eroded. Which is being eroded by themselves, since a lot of younger people don't see unions as having their back. 
A lot of the unions in the UK and France should take a long hard look at themselves and decide if they are really still fighting the good fight. I think they are not. Not all change is bad! It can even lead to great things! A modern, cooperative union could do a lot of good. But we still have Len mcClusky and his cronies, sticking to their principles from the seventies. Maybe the unions in France are even worse. Strike first, talk later, and don't care what harm you done to the country or the company in question.

While I don't mind people getting rich at all, it should be in proportion. A fair tax system should take care of that. Problem is, in a global economy, that will have to be organised worldwide. That will take some time. In the meantime, some measures should be taken to counteract the most horrible cases. 
But we were actually talking about changing labor laws. Do YOU think that somebody ahould be protected at all costs when he or she does something terrible? Do YOU think a company should be forced to retain all personell while it is losing money already? Don't you think too much protection of workers will make employers hestitant to actually hire more workers? 
And no, I'm not talking about zero hours contracts and other extremes. I'm talking about common sense. All extreme sides should have a go at that. And they would find change is necessary in France. And there would have to be some give and take on both sides. Digging in and resisting all change will lead to nothing and will actually hurt all sides of the equation.

Isn't the 'something terrible' for the court to decide? What if the company does something terrible and the employee is actually the whistleblower? Why limit the court's power to just compensation?

Regardless of WHY the company is losing money (for instance because incompetent managers were brought in to terrorize the personnel,  outsource tasks to their buddies and lower personnel salaries so as to give themselves   huge bonuses),  the new laws allow cuts and firing 'so that the company becomes more competitive'. This assumes that  competitiveness is cheap rather than skilled personnel. By that token african companies would be the most competitive.
