The failure of this offense to close out games is a major reason this defense gives up winning drives at the end of games. Look around the league. The rules are set up for scoring not defense. The fact of the matter is this defense produced 5 turnovers. The offense failed to take great field position and produce points. Same thing has been happening since Haley was removed from OC. This offense is has been built into a passing offense to please Ben. The O line has forgotten how to block for the running game because the OC has installed a attack geared around Ben that will now have to be changed to fit Mason. Come out of that dang shotgun) With 4 new starters in the defense they have played well enough that this team with any kind of constant offense should be 2-1. Any team that produces 5 turnovers and then turns around and people point to the last drive when it was the Steeler offense provided a short field for the winning score is just not looking at the facts. The other thing is the offense failed on its last drive that could have also produced a win. The biggest mistake the Steelers have made in the last few years is not signing Bell. He was a game closer. They let a couple million dollars prevent them from the p[layoffs last year and a winning record this year. After failing to give him upfront money they then turn around and give an aging QB 60 million upfront. His cap hit is why they could not get top level free agents at wide receiver and tight end this season. So keep sticking your heads in the sand and blame Tomlin. The fact of the matter is Tomlins players are failing him by mistakes and the high paid O line can not produce a running game. Not scheme can work when the players are getting pushed around. Defense repeatedly set up the offense, but instead of going for the kill they played like they thought they could win the game 6-3 and were trying to kill clock. If you're going to pass, throw at least some of those passes downfield. If you're going to emphasize the run, don't try to do it from the shotgun. And use a fullback. The 49'ers did. He played 50 snaps. And he's bigger than either of the Steelers' inside linebackers (they did miss Vince Williams). But, the majority of those have been pure luck (botched QB snap to Jimmy G, dropped toss sweep to Mostert, snap that hits SF WR in motion, Breida tips ball twice for Watt to intercept). Go back and watch this defense. They do not pass the eye test.
