Concussions are caused by getting \"hit\" in the head with the ball from close range not from heading a ball. The free kicks awarded close to the goal create player-walls where they are more likely to get hit in the head or \"chest\" with a ball.\r\n",

They knew it was a potential like driving down the road in a car or walking outside when a little lightning occurs.\r\nThe only concussion I have seen during heading come from head to head when two kids going for the ball. But like someone else said I have seen more concussions from kids getting ran over during rough play. You know they make head gear to help with that--we require shinguards. Actually saw a goalie hit side bar of the goal once. Maybe we should pad the goal bars. Which reminds me--Actually the two and only two broken bones I have seen on the soccer field involved the goal. A broken arm and a broken finger. Well didn't see the broken arm--but heard of it. There is a lawsuit waiting to happen--unpadded goal posts. There is an inherent risk in everything. I guess I should not have mentioned in post because that will be next years initiative--padding all goal posts. Parents use to have to sign waivers that acknowledged this. I played football in High School and could have broke a bone at anytime, and did experience a concussion. We could require 5 point harnesses in cars, reduce the speed limit to 25 mph, head restraint systems like in race cars, and save 10,000 lives a year easily. When and where do we stop. Do we just play soccer on the Wii--but wait.people would probably throw a hip out of place, or fall out of their lazy boy. So put some mats on the floor. Yes I know I was a little sarcastic and concussions are a serious item But to some extent put head gear in place and show kids the proper technique",

What I don't understand is the panic decision to implement such senseless rule. My 18 year old son has had some pretty good coaching and is a very resourceful player, including his ability to head the ball. My 13 year old daughter is getting there, but with this new, nonsensical rule, my 3 year old will be at a disadvantage if and when she gets to play in an international competition. What will happen if I coach her in my back yard and teach her how to head the ball? Will I be in trouble? What if she scores a header? Will it be disallowed? This rule is a perfect example of what happens when people fail to think of all the possibilities and make a decision based on panic.",

"commentText": "My second issue is one that makes this heading debate all the more the wrong action with the wrong focus. I have watched my two sons play soccer for many years now. In that time I had witnessed three concussions. Not one of them was due to heading the ball. All three where due directly or indirectly to the officials not enforcing the Laws of the Game concerning physical contact, playing in control, and cautions and sending offs. The first occurred in a game where several players were moving recklessly and too fast to be in control of themselves during the game. At one point a player was charged into from behind, forced over the player lying in front of him, his head hit the turf with no way to get his arms out, and then the charging player landed on him and forced his head into the turf a second time. The referee should have taken the reckless and out of control play out of the game before this happened and certainly shouldn't have restarted with a drop ball. \r\nThe second was two players jumping for a header. One intentionally jumped into the other, he fell out of control and the other player also became unbalanced and landed on the first player driving his head into the turf. Another drop ball. \r\nThe third was watching a particularly large player first push one defender out of the way with his arm, then take hold of the next defender with two hands and \"throw\" him out of the way. The ball ran to the goalkeeper who collected it, and also collected a knee to the head causing a concussion. The player still unable to stop clattered into the goalkeeper and caused further damage to his back. Calling neither preceding foul and not issuing a caution or sending off the player meant the referee failed to do his job. \r\nThe level of force officials allow is far beyond what is specified in the Laws of the Game. That's the real issue.",

"commentText": "First, I understand that due to the litigation U.S. Soccer was forced to take action and had to be seen to be making changes that directly related to heading the ball, obviously. \r\nI have two issues. The first is that the action that has been taken is clearly flawed. To begin, I have no argument with the change to the substitution rule. This is very sensible and does not have any real impact on the game. \r\nTo prohibit players 10 and under from heading the ball however, changes the game. I'm not ignoring injuries and the danger in the game when I say that. I don't place the game above the safety of children or indeed adults. I feel that that heading for players 10 and under could be made safer in other ways. As many have stated, teaching better heading technique is necessary and could have been mandated. Now the coaching of heading is in fact prohibited and so this is not possible. Also, what will happen to a player who heads a ball during the game? They are now in greater danger as they won't have been coached on the correct way, and also there will be some rule change that will stop the game at that point and award...? we wait and see. \r\nI recently saw my 9 year old run to meet the flight of a ball from a corner, head it perfectly with the correct part of his forehead, turn his neck with the ball as he did it, and watched in amazement as the ball shot past the goalkeeper into the top near corner. He's been coached on heading and knew how to do it. He produced a header of professional quality. What would happen under the new \"guidelines\"? What will corners become? No more flighting the ball into the box, obviously. \r\nNext, once they player crosses into the 11-13 zone they will have no experience in heading and I believe that the idea is to allow heading in games but to restrict or eliminate the coaching. Now we still have little to no coaching, players who have never headed the ball before, and free heading in games. It's hard to find an argument that justifies that situation. \r\nWhat research has been done into the Locust United Lite ball? It is 100g lighter and claims to play the same as a regular ball but with less impact when headed due to the lower weight and also a more flexible bladder that allows the energy to be absorbed by the ball more easily. \"Force equals mass times acceleration\" is the simple physics behind heading and all other changes in motion. If you reduce the mass, have the ball absorb the change in direction over a longer period of time and thus reduce the acceleration change, you reduce the force that the header creates. As long as the ball cannot be kicked to create greater velocities than a standard ball, this seems to be a very effective solution. The minimum weight restriction from FIFA could be reduced by U.S.Soccer per the FIFA Laws of the game, and kids could play with a safer ball instead of playing a different game. That seems a far better solution to me. Cricket Australia now mandates the wearing of the newest and safest helmet to protect the players after many recent injuries and some fatalities. Let's use technology here to keep the game the same. \r\n",

(One not being a popped up ball 20mph no time to avoid being hit.)\r\n\r\nThough not wanting to agree with this \"rule\" or \"guidance\"; the aricle above conflicts itself, I do tjink that theres merit when taken into the context of the link above. Furthermore, benefits to be had are the emphasis being placed on chest and foot traps, a better way to settle the ball. Something that I wish more players would practice in the younder years. (Shouldering is still an option...)\r\n\r\nYour thoughts?",

Emphasis is now placed upon everything but the basics, which are the correct way to kick the ball, pass the ball, heading, throw ins, etc. It seems as if kids are expected to learn the basics of soccer on their own. A concussion will happen now and again, but if the kids are taught to head the ball correctly, and at the correct time, concussions will most likely be minimized. ",

"commentText": "I think this is a great idea. I would argue most headers at this age are done improperly and unnecessary given the athletes position on the field. That is to say, a random header in the middle of the field is more often than not, unnecessary. A well placed chest trap out of pressure could be substituted in the majority of these situations.\r\nThen at the ages of 11-13 to introduce proper heading techniques during practice and then only allow them in the goalie box as a shot on goal during a game. In my 30+ years of soccer involvement at various levels, once again at this age category, you are looking at 1-2 realistic header opportunities per game. I think this is an easy fix and one that you would get little to no push back. By limiting the headers to be performed in the box, it gives the referee's a clear boundary and eliminates any 'grey area'. It also provides coaches and parents defined parameters defining the safety measures in place and it gives the players a defined area in which to execute the play.\r\nIf the goal, no pun intended, is to reduce unnecessary head injuries I applaud the USSF for taking these steps!",

"commentText": "I have to agree with you Tom. I have two teams, one just above and one just below U10. They don't head the ball really. if it is done its an attempt if you will. I just started working with my U14 girls to start heading the ball, but they usually chose to trap by other means and progress from there. They are just not confident to head the ball. The few that are and want to try and progress, I think they should use some sort of head gear protection if they want to head the ball outside the goal box. \r\n",
