Why is election day on a Tuesday? the only reason I can figure is that Tuesday in November was 18th Century Market Day after all the crops were in. It's the 21st Century. Why are we still doing this? Everywhere else Election Day is a Sunday or Holiday so EVERYONE can vote. This country loves to make voting somewhere from difficult to impossible for many citizens. Electing our government should not be a PROBLEM!",

"commentText": "Aside from the fact that many Americans will want to write in this year, but the DRE won't make it obvious how (or perhaps won't even allow it) - who has NOT thought about how easy it would be to conceal whatever mischief is done with a DRE? I mean, really. You cast your ballot and return the card. You must trust that your votes were counted correctly. Well, you don't have to trust, but if you don't, what could you possibly do about it?

What seems to make very good sense to me would be a device that would correctly format and print your ballot with the names you chose. If you typed in Bugs Bunny for a particular office, the \"ballot writer\" would dutifully format that text in the correct ballot position for the office. If you checked one of the \"normal\" candidates, that name would appear in the correct place. You could review all these choices on the screen, then push the button, and a white copy and a colored copy would emerge. You slide the white copy into the slot and take the colored (say, yellow) copy home. A scanner can easily read these uniformly-printed white copies. All candidates actually on the ballot see their votes counted with no issue. Write-in candidate ballots are sorted out with a red box printed around the write-in (unless previously registered as a candidate and recognized by the scanner, in which case the vote is handled just as for the on-the-ballot candidates), so that the election worker can deal with the voter's intent.

To avoid issues with fraudulent ballots, a barcode (or some other coded image) is printed on the white ballot,
and the writer sends the reader the distinct image, not to be duplicated between any two genuine ballots. The reader whines if it doesn't get the right barcode, and summons the election workers to offer assistance to the voter. If necessary, the ballot is not recorded and the voter gets another attempt - or, if found to be passing fraudulent paper, is hauled off to the pokey.
",
