I am grateful for the distinction between ASP and SaaS. I also share the authors view that businesses need the clarity of formal, unambiguous requirements to drive new make-or-buy technology decisions.
Beyond these two points of value, I feel the author has offered a disservice to business and technology leaders by diminishing the important strengths of SaaS as well as aiding in the broader understanding of Cloud computing. These strengths of the Cloud and SaaS are today, important drivers of business flexibility, agility, innovation, adaptability, and in many cases, much lower costs of business operations.
I respectfully argue that the mind sets and business technology models of Microsoft and IBM before them, and the Y2K fiasco that still locks IT organizations, large and small, to unjustifiable long-term capital investments and inflexible software solutions. Such historical practices has the effect of immobilizing business, often for 5 to 10 years while their competition \"leap frogs\" them with new technology-driven solutions.
I believe that SaaS and Cloud, on-demand solutions provide the greater freedom and financial benefits needed to address 21st Century needs.
I assert that businesses, armed with well articulated and current business, customer, and technology requirements are best served by exploring their infrastructure, applications, and related resources that can be more effectively served by SaaS and Cloud providers. The wealth of services, opportunities and benefits offered today represent only a sample of the future that is coming rapidly to us.
