Imagine if Ethiopia used the water from the Nile. I doubt it would be a poor country if it did so. It could probably grow endless crops. Yet on the TV we see people singing we are the world and sending bags of food to poor Ethiopia. You have to as yourself than is Ethiopia really poor?<br />",

"commentText": "A fair coverage of historical facts and political realities. Here are a couple of critics, if I may, that the Dam is not just 19 miles from the Sudan border (it might at least be more than a hundred miles) and what the author referred to as \"the great unknown\" namely the impact on the ecosystem and on those so-called fishing communities is almost an irrelevant issue concerning the Dam simply because there are no fishing communities in the region and in a region primarily over used in traditional farming systems and extremely overpopulated ecosystem disruption because of the dam is out of the question.\r\n\r\nThe two regimes both in Ethiopia and Egypt have no democratic mandates is true and even the entire crux of the matter lies there. Talking about the use of force or in a language akin to it even before any incident of that sort occurs seems to be a bit of putting the cart before the horse and perhaps a bit inflammatory. However, the gravity of the issue for the future in international relations as well as regionally is something to be underlined, as the author points out. I hope to play a scholarly a part in it eventually.",

"commentText": "Some of the points mentioned are just cheap. To mention a few\r\n1. Egyptian airstrike- first of all that is the rarest of all the option Egypt could make. Furthermore, i don't think the Egyptian Air force has the capability to come all the way to Ethiopia and attack the GERD\r\n2. For centuries, Muslim Egypt supplied the head of Ethiopia’s Orthodox Church, a state religion until the 1974 revolution. The imperial regime of Haile Selassie found itself under political pressure to leave the centuries-old arrangement intact following the 1959 Nile accord that excluded Ethiopia- This comes out of a completely ill-informed mind. The change for the mentioned arrangement has its own complicated history not because of the 1959 agreement. Let's not relate what is unrelated.",

Untill recent times, we were known for our famine issues which is not what the nature has brought to us,rather it is something which comes to us due to lack of good governance. Now, we are trying to get back to the track and we have seen the light on the other side of the tunnel. So please refrain from any act that will stand b/n us and the light that we saw on the other side. We trust in God ,not on our military force only. We don't care what kind of military weapon Egypt has,but we have a determination which fought back a well equipped Italy. I am not saying,we should fight, but if the option is war,we know what to do. There is a saying in Afan oromo&quot; Dog barks from where it gets its food&quot; ,so those who are feed by Egypt let you bark from that side, but we are Ethiopians and we can defend our country. Look at the TV program of Egypt, they show starved and famine striked black African's,while we feed them through Nile. ",

Why western countries would refuse to help Egypt with the Aswan Damn project forcing Egypt to turn to the Soviets baffles me...this is my understanding if I remember history correctly. Egypt would have taken a different path in development providing more employment and the US would have a developing country to export to. Maybe I am naïve about &quot;guerilla capitalism&quot; letting multi-nationals compete for the most bananas on the tree.",

"commentText": "Interesting article. I must disagree with some of your points, though. You stated that it is not in Ethiopia's long-term best interest to antagonize Egypt. I think it is the other way around. Egypt seems to be at its dusk of international popularity while Ethiopia is on a nice growth trajectory with increasing political clout. In addition, you stated that Egypt might take military action to destroy the dam, but Ethiopia might not be able to respond in kind. Several paragraphs above this statement, you wrote that Ethiopia defeated militarily better-equipped Egypt and Italy. What makes you think that one of the largest militaries in Africa cannot defeat Egypt again? In fact, the Ethiopian military might just walk over there since, as you stated, Sudan has been diplomatically won over. Your article is clearly Egypt-biased, but that doesn't surprise me because you are a Middle Eastern news organization. However, you could impress your non-Middle Eastern readers by being more neutral. ",

The author, despite the fact that he holds grudge of some sort couldn't have done a better ' objective analysis' of this ' hot potato'. The Egyptians will have to come to ' their senses' and approach it in a pragmatic way and take steps to conserve the water ' delivered free of charge' by Ethiopian rivers. Have they tried to implement some of the methods of the Israeli farmers, there wouldn't be any talk about ' negative' consequence. Instead, Egyptians are cultivating water- thirsty commodities in the middle of the Sahara. Water is supplied to anyone almost free of charge, be it for ' rational use' or for golf courses or swimming pools. They want to keep the status quo and are demanding ever more water from the Nile. This is outrageous and can't continue. \r\n\r\nEgypt has to abide by the New treaty which stipulates ' fair and equitable share'. signed by the Nile states The upper nile states will meet it more than half way . They wish it no harm and they sure don't have any intent on starving the Egyptians. But if and when they wish to attack the Dam, all hell will break loose. There will be repercussions and dire consequence for Egyptians. If General Sisi, who is sure to be the next president of this renegade State thinks along the way of his predecessors, it will be a ' travesty' for the future will be bleak for the average Egyptians. Ethiopians will not sit idly if and when their dam is attacked, mark my words! \r\n\r\n",

But this does not mean we are hardly able to defend our country. We can stand as one within only few minutes to defend our selves. Be ware that we defeated Italy, Turkey and Egypt several times. Please try to read History. ",

"commentText": "The truth of the matter is, Egyptian leaders know that Egypt has no viable way out of this matter except for negotiated compromise. But they are afraid telling the only options candidly to some war mongering political and scholarly elites...for fear that they will cry foul and cause political fallout. In time, however, they will have to tell the truth...that they can do nothing about it except wage proxy war. Ethiopia knows what Egyptian politicians are capable of in that regard. Ethiopia has taken well over a decade preparing for this scenario...it did't happen over a night. It has been working aggressively bringing the upper riparian countries under a new agreement, CFA, which was signed by the majority of them and waiting for ratification in some countries. Ethiopia is proceeding business as usual with Nile Basin Initiative and Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office (ENTRO) activities without Egypt, and with a new member, South Sudan. All in all, Ethiopia is legally, morally, and politically on the upper hand on the case of the Nile. If Egypt doesn't want to sign the CFA agreement or start negotiate on it, it will not have the legal ground to justify any cause it might have. But, sooner or later, darling of the West, Egypt will realize that it has been spoiled over the Nile water so bad that it didn't try to get a better deal out of the upstream projects. They have taken a ridiculous route of comparing Egypt's only one river, the Nile, against Ethiopia's numerous rivers as a means to justify their absolute right. Here in Ethiopia, we know that Egypt's cry is not about water shortage, it's about regional dominance. They don't like to see a competitive and more assertive neighbor in the South. Time and after, Egypt have followed, and following to this day, that same mentality.\r\nIf water shortage is an issue, why don't they stop Nile from flowing freely to the Mediterranean ocean? Turning back the water though channels at the very end of the delta can mean they will have abundant of it... They know it is easily doable...but that plan will not keep others poor and incompetent, alas!",

All nations must learn to manage water, as you well know. We in California are learning this fast.\r\n\r\nEthiopia is progressing rapidly in many areas as evidenced by China, Turkey, India and other nations sending their leaders and businessmen to visit and start factories. General Electric will bring a host of 'support' companies to the enterprise. Are you afraid of modernization?\r\n\r\nDo not stir up ethnic problems...America had a vegetable soup of different ethnic groups that hated others decades ago (look at West Side Story)...but the variety is our strength now...I have friends of many ethnic groups and enjoy them all...perhaps you need to leave the cold of Minnesota and come to California to broaden your wisdom...the 80 languages in Ethiopia will blend to form a leader for Africa...it has begun...\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n ",

Thus, the people of Ethiopia are to use the water for good which includes feeding their citizens. God would also like Ethiopia to share their resources with neighbors. Yet, some neighbors feel that water belongs to them without rain...a very selfish idea. For many years, Egypt has taken a majority of water when Ethiopians have had starvation. Egypt did not help with the water or food as a good neighbor should...does Egypt owe water of past decades to Ethiopia(yes)? Will Egypt help the families of young orphans whose parents died of starvation? I think not...Egypt is still seeing water flow in the Nile...time for Egypt the manage their water according to modern methods...less talk and more management action...the dam's power will allow for desalination of sea water and power to pump this fresh water over the mountains to irrigate much of Northern Africa, thus providing food and jobs to thousands...Kenya can share in this as they too have geothermal power to benefit mankind...we are at the beginning of a new era of peace and prosperity, if greed does not prevail...Egypt can use wind turbines to power their desalination plants near their sea water coasts for unlimited fresh water, if needed...so also can Somalia and other nations with ocean frontage...open your eyes to the vast potential now available with technology...old, non valid, rules were established by colonial greed masters, not by the scientific community...we can go to the moon and further, thus we can manage water which is 70% of the earth's surface.\r\nPS. We in America will not support Egypt in an attack on Ethiopian soil...\r\n\r\n",

I do not think the author has researched the case enough. I can see that he has been away from home for a very long time. First of all, his description of Ethiopia's political system is at best malicious. Second, he doesn't have any clue about what it takes to launch a war. The fact of the matter is there is no legitimate and justified cause for the two countries to engage in upfront confrontation. Egypt, for that matter, doesn't have the capacity to launch an air strike as far as GERD. The other options, like working through Eritrea and &quot;bandas&quot;, I think it is well noted. So, Dear author, there is no compromise or what so ever to be made by Ethiopia.",
