"commentText": "The benefit to the establishment of legalizing weed is tremendous. It's just another to medicate people and this is coming from someone who's a long time smoker. But it should be legal for adults. It's beyond absurd that it was ever outlawed and is still federally classified along with heroin and cocaine.  If there were as many pot smokers in the US back then as there are today, it never would have been outlawed eve. That's why we made alcohol legal again even though it's far more destructive to society that cannabis and we've always known, It was part of culture. <br /><br />Anslinger was a man interested in one thing: career advancement. and that abt sums up everything that is wrong with our society, people will do anything for a good paycheck. Of course it also served Rockefeller interests to stamp out hemp bc it could easily complete with Standard Oil's gas and later, plastics industries.  Henry Ford's first car didnt just run on hemp fuel.. the door panels were made from it  Many parts were. We can make biodegrade plastics from hemp! Plastic is one of the greatest threats facing this planet. 90% of sea birds have plastic in the guts and it is estimated thaat within 3 decades or so the oceans will contain more plastic than fish!.  And this kind of 'Indian hemp' doesnt even get you high! So that completely shows there was more to the story of the demonizing it than good ol' Harry.  <br />",

"commentText": "<p>During the Viet Nam war smoking pot was the in thing. With a few seeds you could grow your own 20 foot plants. Each plant worth several hundred dollars. A ounce (25 grams) of pot sold from (cheap crap) $5.00 to $5.00 a gram. If you had cheap barn yard crap and you wanted to increase it potent you added chemicals to it. Another way was to add chemicals to the plant as it was growing  A normal plant would reach 20 feet, chemicals add to it could increase the height another ten feet or more. Some farmers used to sell the leaves instead of the crush leafs. </p><p>Some of the plants grown today are a lot more potent then those grown back then. Decades of genetic cross breeding have created super strength plants. One joint and your feeling great all day. Something to add sparkle to the eyes of the user.</p><p>Bad side is that during the Viet Nam war 50,000 people were dying on US highways. Not only from drinking, but from puffing.</p><p>This experiment should be interesting.</p><p>Time will again tell.</p>",

"commentText": "While people try to make something of the original drug prohibition right after the end of of Prohibition, the real crack down on Marijuana came with the rise of its use with anti-war activists during Vietnam. Young people were socializing around the substance, and both the Johnson and Nixon Administrations endeavored to try to use drug laws to keep young people from socializing.\r\n\r\nThe Reagan Administration was much more successful. The drug culture that started with peace activists in the 1960's had really got out of control by the end of the 1970's. It was time for a crack down. More than that, the conservatives running the government still wanted to go after whatever was left of the anti-war movement.\r\n\r\nThe crack down was harsh, and with advents like the privatization of prisons, the fact prohibition increases the value of contraband, and the sheer momentum of a new enforcement regime, the crackdown of the 1980's had a snowball effect. The effects of law enforcement have been worse that the effect of the most dangerous drugs for decades, now.\r\n\r\nDecriminalization, and even the complete legalization of marjhuchi is just a baby step. Everybody knows people that smoke dope, and don't think those people belong in prison. The harder question is how to deal with cocaine and heroin, as these are the drugs of serious crime. Law enforcement only serves to keep these things profitable. Of course, drugs like LSD and MDMA will be the last to have any leniency, as not enough people use them to create any problem for society.",

The only reason we have the drug laws we do is bc of how much cash it generates for Wall St. The drug war and prion industries are also huge businesses. With seizure/forfeiture seizure laws that have completely compromised law enforcement's supposed objectivity. <br /><br />Check out the book Chasing The Scream - it's an overview of the 100 year old drug war. It also lays out Portugal's incredible accomplishment at cutting their massive iv using drug population by half in ten years and talks about the Rat Park experiments. It's interesting reading. . <br />",

"commentText": "Racism was only an 'added-value' proposition that extended from British colonial asylums in Cairo and Delhi where 40% of inmates were purportedly there due to hashish abuse. The Brit govt. was intent on taxing ganja if possible, but they needed to investigate the veracity of these claims. Their reaction to the 'vicious' nature of cannabis was quite similar to the modern emerging viewpoint. The bottom line was that the cannabis being marketed could not be analyzed and the variations between different prescriptions proved untenable. Moreover, the shelf life issue had not been factored in and ultimately the 'nod' was instead given to powdered opiates and laudanum. Also, the AMA used cannabis as a means to discredit naturopaths. Policy derived from the AMA and pharmaceutical companies, i.e., nothing at all has changed.",

"commentText": "So, implied by Al Jazeera, the efforts to ban &quot;mariguana&quot; (not ...juana) were first initiated by the Feds to stem the massive illegal immigration of Mexicans...fleeing a socialist revolution beginning in 1910(!) and the persecution of Catholics, including deportation-to-murder of priests.\r\nOverlooked in the article is the FACT that our nation had via the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, only three years before, rescinded the 18th Amendment establishing the Prohibition of alcohol in 1920. So, 27 years had past between the advent of the immigration flight to the U.S. and the Fed effort to contain the drug &quot;smuggling&quot; in 1937.\r\nOf course, &quot;smuggling&quot; might not have been essential because the stuff could be and is grown here just as readily as south of the border.\r\nThe 1930s were desperate times. Unemployment was a REALLY big time issue. Twenty-five percent of the work force, which then consisted mostly of men, had NO work.\r\nUnions worked feverishly to control a lot of things. My own father's anger at Italians was born out of the &quot;scabbing&quot; (crossing union picket line to take jobs of union &quot;citizen&quot; employees) by Italian immigrants. Would you suppose the opposition to the Mexican influx would, for similar reasons, be as reasonable at the time...as it is to this very day?\r\nI think the opposition to &quot;pot&quot; was but an extension of the belief by &quot;the many&quot; at the time that the world would be a better place without such things as intoxicants and gambling. Many believe that true today.\r\nMight some folks of the deep south of the time have been bigots? Might the north then and now contain a few of its own? You betcha. But I don't think THE reason for federal intervention in the drug trade stemmed from bigotry.",

So while racism was the method, unethical industrial competition was the motive.",

Their satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage.&quot;&quot;\r\n\r\nSorry. That quote never happened. Anslinger said a lot of stupid things, but he never said that. The proof has been online for almost twenty years. You can find the full text of his testimony for the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/hemp/taxact/taxact.htm Nowhere in his testimony does anything like that appear.\r\n\r\nWhat is more interesting is that he states emphatically that there is no &quot;gateway&quot; effect. He states quite clearly that there is no connection between marijuana and heroin. ",

At the time the law was passed, the biggest product in synthetic fibers was women's nylon stockings. No woman was going to trade her nylon stockings for hemp stockings.\r\n\r\nBesides, DuPont made their money from explosives, not fibers, and the thirties was a great time to sell explosives.\r\n\r\nIn addition, hemp was such a rapidly fading crop in the US that even the farmers who grew it didn't protest when it was outlawed. The reason was that they weren't making any money on it, anyway. They still had the hemp from three years earlier sitting in the warehouses unsold because there were no buyers.\r\n\r\nEtc,. etc.",

"commentText": "Another major reason for the decline in the American hemp market was the importation of hemp from Southeast Asia. \r\nAs in all industries there is completion. Hemp grows faster in the tropics and has a longer growing season. Plus labor is cheaper. This wiped out the American hemp industry. We continued to process the raw hemp. Mainly into rope, since nylon and glass rope had not been invented yet.\r\n\r\nThis was the reason that America started growing hemp leading up to and during WWII. Japan had taken over the parts of the world we were importing our hemp from. We suddenly needed more hemp rope than ever and had no source. Every American Navy ship needed several tons of rope to operate.\r\nThe same thing will happen again. If hemp and/or marijuana is legalized the American market will be wiped out by cheaper imported hemp for the above described reasons\r\n",

"commentText": "The US is third largest cotton producer -- not knocked out there:\r\nhttp://www.indexmundi.com/agriculture/?commodity=cotton&amp;graph=production\r\n\r\nAnd, it appears that worldwide demand for fiber for composite, fabric, papers and other necessary products (not to mention the demand for polymers for chemical products, pharmaceuticals and nutrition, beyond that) is far beyond the capacity of any one georegion. Regardless, its applications will mirror the applications of petroleum, as it is utilized today: \r\nhttp://www.afma.org/f-info/More_News/feb1.htm\r\n\r\nErgo: Not only is North America a viable and competitive georegion for cannabis as a major agricultural force, the US has the infrastructure, the know-how and a willing and ready workforce to take the cannabis and work US innovative magic (remember, we're those exceptional ones who can do that). Doesn't mean there won't always be pressures and competition. But, it does mean that you recognize you've got to be on your toes and creatively innovative all the time -- unlike when we took our eye off of solar there for a little while).\r\n\r\nWith the need for less burning of fossil fuels for the planet, agricultural practices can be implemented that would stir up less of carbon into the atmosphere while cultivating, planting and harvesting it. This on top of the fact that it already has a much lower carbon footprint than petroleum production, manufacturing and other energy use.\r\n\r\nAlso, beyond the fact that hemp will play a much more elemental role today than it did in the 19th century, affecting the composition of more products -- along with other plant-based fibers, we have a world that is working towards a better equality, where all of the world's citizens can prosper -- and the world economy can prosper without huge wealth inequality and injustice. A world also where a greater emphasis will be increasingly placed on non- and less-polluting means of manufacture, energy consumption and living. This is not the same scenario as the economic situation you are trying to parallel with the present going into the future.\r\n\r\nNot that this is directly what the article is about, but to answer your concerns that we'd create the same situation of almost 200 years ago when certain bad things went on that don't go on today -- and certain good things (or potentially so) that go on today, that didn't go on in those times. That one differentiation (and what the real-world implications are) is why the comparison doesn't work.",
