I must have slept in some of the most horrible locations but mostly on park benches. Once, a cop brought me a blanket from his police car while I slept on a park bench in a light snow storm. I returned the blanket to the station the following day and took a turkey to them on thanksgiving, which they shared with me. Today, I would be either set on fire by a bunch of young slackers (with smart phones), accosted and then arrested or simply slaughtered in a hail of bullets. As I practice Medicine, I come into contact with horribly battered homeless, many of whom hold jobs while subsisting on three meals a week ... barely. Many even have families. What this nation has come to in its tragic decline is truly sad. I have lived and worked in third world nations in which such folks were treated with significantly better humanity. So long as this continues, we have absolutely no business calling ourselves a \"Christian\" nation. We are no such thing and the world simply laughs at us for claiming as much. Go without access to laundry, a bath and all of the conveniences of modern life in a civilized country and see how you appear. Our lack of compassion and tendency to blame everyone for their misfortune doesn't say much for us as a people. It's very true that if one is an addict or has children access to social services is easier. Also many new arrivals in tho country gain services our citizens cannot obtain. This forces many to live on the margins. I am the result of molestation, my mother gave birth to me at age 13. Both were poor, white and uneducated. The Courts and Social Services were not there to be my saviors, I was a dollar sign to them. After 11 years of abuse and neglect, the state finally removed me from my home. By then, the damage was done. Molestation, beatings, starvation, poor social skills and was diagnosed with 4 mental health disorders. When I turned 18, I decided not to remain in the custody of the state (mental illness, disability, life-time of assisted living). I went to college, full scholarship (80k), relocated, and began my professional career as a social worker making 15k. I could not afford both housing and medications. I did not qualify for medicaid because I was employed and I did not qualify for assistance from charity/non-prof bc I did not have children, a drug addiction or was homeless. After 4 years of working, I was let go after repeated psychotic episodes (medication minimizes). I then lost my 401k, savings, my home and then my car. This was during the bailout, so I could not find another job. I stayed with friends and got a job after a year. 2 years later I was again let go due to my mental health. Became homeless again and started sleeping/camping in woods rather than being a burden on friends. During the oast 1.5 year, I have been hospitalized (getting back on meds) only to be dischared with no medications. The state then denied both medicaid and mental health disability, even though the state itself diagnosed my mental illness when I was a child. Since the state cured of my mental illness, I do not have access to meds (unstable), I do not have access to counseling, I do not qualify for temporary housing (reserved only for those on disability recv an income or veterans), I do not qualify for transitional housing bc I'm not an addict nor do I have children. Society hates me for being born, society hates me for not being able to keep a job while they work tiredlessly, society hates me for having a mental illness and then when I try to access healthcare/resources society hates me even more bc I don't deserve it. I don't know what percentage of the people living at your local bus stop are insane and/or drug addled, but I'd guess that it's close to 100%. Families that become down on their luck, or even singles that aren't druggies or insane, seem to take advantage of shelters and available programs to help them get back on their feet. Why do I think that? Because I don't see them anywhere... All that I see are crazy yelling people peeing everywhere, I see young able bodied tattooed people standing with signs asking for money, talking about their \"hunger\". These people completely take over and DESTROY an area. Where I live in Honolulu china town is disgusting because of the homeless. Pee smell everywhere, crazy people everywhere, drug use everywhere, prostitues in many areas. Tourist don't come here, business owners want a change, residents are tired of elling pee, bus stops aren't bus stops - they are disgusting homeless shelters, the park off aala street isn't for everyone even though everyone pays for it - it's a tent city where parents tell their kids not to go. \r\n\r\nI can't go pee everywhere and live on your door step now can I? Can we please have our city back? There are no children living ok the street here, I'm assuming they are utilizing the tools available to them. The people on the streets are completely INSANE and/or completely DRUGGED. We do need a better system in place to help these people, but allow them to take over and ruin areas is not the system we need. \r\n\r\nYou think it's a lack of compassion? Then go live in these areas and give them a dollar every time you walk by, just so they can forget your face and yell some crazy nonsense at you the next day.
