"commentText": "Yeah..well, Im a North American Indian and our lake became part of a national park when I was 11. The pigs shot and killed my grandmother in her canoe and no one investigated cause she was India. My Dad experienced cruel and unusual racism against him but he never gave up fishing and in his later years was considered the BEST fishing guide and guided the Vice President of the USA gov't. Then the pigs chased me around and finally \" hit\" my cabin and burnt it to the ground! Yeah I never saw any non white canoe/ camping or fishermen that weren't white. Luckily for nature not too many of them can take such isolation in nature or it would be trashed like the rest of North America is. WOW it only took a few hundred years for them to create a pig sty.",

The reported disparate treatment of the different female university professors visiting Yosemite National Park is not acceptable and I am sure not condoned in our national park areas. This study was nothing more than the game of \"gotcha\". It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had the individuals in the study gone through the normal legitimate process national parks have in place to waive entrance fees for educational and research purposes. I think that would have been a better outcome for those park visitors to Yosemite National Park.\r\n ",

Where I live the nearest national park to me, excluding Churches and battlefields is 437 miles away. I would have to pass dozens of State Parks on my way to there and those state parks have better facilities and more affordable entrance fees. In the visiting of NPS parks...I would bet that there are so many variables that would have to be considered in park visitation patterns that using race as the only one is invalid. I would bet that urban vs suburban vs rural statistics are even more relevant. ",

Upon even initial conversations, the responses from social science academics (independent of race) would be different that from the natural or physical sciences that would be going to the research station. \r\n\r\nWere these Academics actual scientists of the type that would be going to a research station or just fake research scientists? They could just be measuring peoples understanding of nerd behavior and probabilities, where the low probability created a question and the response to that question created further questions. ",

"commentText": "This article has a point, admittedly, but it is thin on facts. Do we have a disparity in minority visitors to national parks? Absolutely. The problem is that a single case of racial bias by a single employee cannot be drawn out to indicate a systemic problem in a larger system. Really, the fact that the Park Service has launched an investigation is a indicator that they are taking the matter seriously.\r\n\r\nLets consider actual facts. The majority of minorities live in urban environments. Most urban areas are a moderate to far distance from major national parks, therefore getting to them can represent a decently expensive cost. Now economic data indicates that minorities are often worse off than whites in terms of household income, and in an era where even white \"middle class\" families struggle to vacation, we expect minorities to be surging in attendance?\r\n\r\nLets also consider that the article notes minorities have preconceived notions of how they will be treated at national parks. This is not factual data derived by experience in many cases. This bias is built on misconceptions and should not be relied on as a tenant that national parks are racist. I have a preconceived notion that going to the dentist is an unpleasant experience (a concept shared with millions of Americans) that said, it's not based on facts, and it's not true in all cases. Experience fixes this, and we need to encourage this perception (of parks) to be changed.",

Call me naïve, but I never saw any racism and I am super sensitive to it, or shall I say opinionated against it. In fact I saw the opposite of racism but welcomed diversity. I couldn't help but smile and spend a little extra time with a African American family. Most rangers I worked with were open minded, laid back individuals who didn't suffer from societies hang ups. Nelson Mandela once stated \"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.\". We cannot put the responsibility onto an innocent bystander just because someone fears the other might treat them wrong. People of all races I'm sure have. That said, is there evidence in this article of a chronic racial problem in national parks? Hardly. I've been working for the parks as a ranger for 12 years and only once did I experience racism, but it was off-duty and not directed towards a visitor. A coworker used the \"n\" word and was called out by several people, including myself. He was never rehired as a result. There was racism in the parks, but that was before the Civil Rights Act and there was racism everywhere. I am very open-minded and respectful of all races, religions, sexual-orientation, etc. Everyone is treated the same. ",

"commentText": "Just an anecdote, perhaps providing insight: a black co-worker once asked me if it was safe for her and her husband to go to a park in the North Georgia mountains. She was keenly aware of the history there, where large and active KKK groups successfully drove most people of color out of the region between 1880 and 1950. She also knew I had worked a previous job in a town not far from the park and was familiar with the attitudes of the people in the region. I remembered the white co-workers who talked with pride of their daddies walking in the KKK parades, and who said there were no problems with race in America until MLK riled up the black people (they used a different descriptor), and who said the local sheriff ought to keep a tight rein on the few blacks left in town. I could not tell my co-worker she would feel either safe or welcome. This was the early 1990s. On recent trips to the mountains, I have noticed more black visitors, so maybe the climate has gotten better. I hope so.",

And anyway, what is the problem if use of the parks follows cultural lines that also have racial tendencies? Ninety years ago Black people were the best tap dancers. Does that mean that America is not racist for not subsidizing tap dancing for White people? Why is it assumed to be racism if cultural patterns have a racial component? Is it wrong that in rural Central California, hypothetically, a high percentage of Buddhists over the age of 95 are Japanese who have worked in agriculture? ",

The black population is large in the South, as well as in a few Northern urban areas- and a few cities in California. Most national parks and forests aren't in areas where there are many black people, so that explains why there aren't many black park employees or visitors. Maybe you should think about something for more than two seconds before screaming racism. All you're doing is delegitimizing valid charges of racism with this nonsense.",

As kids we didn't live near any, both our parents worked and they just weren't outdoors people. We also never went to summer camp or any kind of day camp because we simply couldn't afford it and my parents would not take handouts. It didn't destroy our world.\r\n\r\nIt is NOT the responsibility of the parks dept to institute racist hiring practices to see if they can induce more blacks to use the parks. The parks dept should be hiring the best qualified and recommended people they can get to provide the best service for ALL park users. Parks depts have to do a lot of rescue and law enforcement work. The LAST thing we need is to cut qualifications for people doing that kind of work.",

I have never visited or lived in a country where race is such a national pastime, such an unhealthy preoccupation that instead if its intentions only serves to push people apart on issues which aren't even issues. (In the UK we have lots of minorities which actually are minorities, unlike in the USA where whites are no a minority versus non-whites.)",

"commentText": "Another factor might be that national parks tend to exist in areas that have histories of active hostility to black people. James Loewen's book, Sundown Towns, details how African Americans spread throughout America after the civil war, but were largely forced into urban enclaves by white hostility during the fifty years following the end of Reconstruction. Lynchings, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, and de facto or de jure segregation occurred throughout America.\r\nThe 'whiteness' of rural and western America is a product of active and often terrifying bigotry. Park rangers who grew up in these areas grew up in an ethos that assumes 'whiteness' as the norm, and that people of color are strangers and (possibly dangerous) outsiders.\r\nPart of the solution might be for every park service employee to be heavily inserviced regarding the operation of race in American history and society.",
